North Ayrshire ( Gaelic Sìorrachd Inbhir Air a Tuath ) is one of 32 Council Areas in Scotland . The mainland is in the traditional county of Ayrshire and borders Renfrewshire , East Ayrshire and South Ayrshire . The county also includes Arran Island in traditional Bute County and some islands in the Firth of Clyde (including Great Cumbrae and Little Cumbrae ). From 1975 to 1996 North Ayrshire formed a district of the Strathclyde region under the name Cunninghame .
