Portencross is a village in the Scottish Council Area of North Ayrshire . It is located on the south bank of the Firth of Clyde about ten kilometers south of Largs and 17 kilometers northwest of Irvine . The hamlet consists of only a few farms and residential buildings. Portencross is off the A78 and can be reached via a spur road. In 1961 Portencross had 63 inhabitants.

In 1306 the lands came into the possession of Robert Boyd of Kilmarnock and thus the Boyd clan , who used them until 1737. In the course of the 14th century, the fortress Portincross Castle , located directly on the shore, was built and probably revised several times in the following centuries. Today it is only preserved as a ruin.
