Kilbirnie ( Gaelic : Cille Bhraonaidh ) is a town in the Scottish Council Area of North Ayrshire .

geography

Kilbirnie is a small town in east North Ayrshire. It stretches on both sides of the Garnock River about 16 kilometers north of Irvine and 18 kilometers southwest of Paisley . The closest city is Beith, around three kilometers to the east . A few hundred meters east is Kilbirnie Loch .

history

To the west of Kilbirnie, Kilbirnie Castle was built in the 15th century and was the seat of the Crawford clan for a long time . The village grew slowly at first. In 1742 there were only three houses, to which five more were added in the following 50 years. In the course of industrialization , Kilbirnie grew rapidly with the advent of the textile industry to 2631 inhabitants in 1841 and had a population of around 3300 until 1881. At the 1971 census there were 8,259 people in the city. Since then, the number has fallen to 7,642, most recently in 2011. This is partly due to the decline of traditional industries in the Central Belt . This is also reflected in the very high poverty rate of 31% in Kilbirnie. According to a 2012 study, Kilbirnie residents have the ninth lowest life expectancy of any city in the UK .

traffic

Kilbirnie is connected to the trunk road network by the A760 . In the 19th century the neighboring village of Glengarnock was connected to the railway network. Later, Kilbirnie South and Kilbirnie were two train stations in the city area, which were closed in 1930 and 1966, respectively. They were served by the Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway of the Caledonian Railway and the Dalry and North Johnstone Line of the Glasgow and South Western Railway . Glengarnock Station continues to operate and is on the Ayrshire Coast Line of First ScotRail . Glasgow International Airport is around 20 km to the northeast.

Attractions

The Kilbirnie Auld Kirk dates back to a church building from the 1470s. Over the centuries the structure has been expanded several times and is still in use today. Ladyland House was built north of the city in 1816 . Just like the church building, it is classified in the highest Scottish monument category A. Furthermore, a sundial is listed on the manorial property in this category. Kilbirnie Castle ruins are classified as a Category B Monument.
