description

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 90 to 95 millimeters. All wings have a whitish, yellowish or light bluish to greenish basic color. There are wide black horizontal stripes on the top of the wings. Female moths are sometimes almost monochrome black. The hind wings show red eye-spots near the tornus and long black, white-edged tails. The underside of the hind wings shows all the features of the upper side in the same places in a somewhat paler design, but also has a narrow red horizontal stripe.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars show a dichotomy in color. The upper area is black with a white spot in the middle, the lower area is green.

Similar species

Protographium philolaus is darker in overall appearance than other species of the genus Protographium , which also lack bluish or greenish drawing elements.

distribution and habitat

Protographium philolaus occurs from southern Texas to Honduras . The species prefers to live in tropical forest landscapes.

Way of life

Collection of butterflies on a damp earth spot

The moths form two generations per year, which can be found from March to November. They visit various flowers to take in nectar or like to take in liquids and minerals in damp places on the earth, where they sometimes appear in large numbers. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various Annonaceae . The second generation pupae overwinter.
