Lamlash ( Gaelic : An t-Eilean Àrd ) is the largest village on the Scottish island of Arran in the Unitary Authority of North Ayrshire . It hugs Lamlash Bay , a side bay of the Firth of Clyde , on the east side of Arran. Brodick , the island's main town and ferry port, is around six kilometers to the north. The village stretches along the A841 , the main road from Arran.

history

The port of Lamlash is protected by the opposite Holy Island ( Holy Isle ). In the past, steamers to Brodick, Ardrossan , Rothesay and Greenock docked there. Today Lamlash is important as a holiday resort. In the second half of the 20th century, the population of Lamlash almost doubled. In 1961, 528 people were counted, compared to 1010 in 2001. In the 2011 census survey, 957 people lived in Lamlash.

Attractions

In Lamlash there are currently two buildings of the highest Scottish monument category A. The neo-Gothic Lamlash and Kilbride Parish Church was built in 1886 at the behest of William Douglas-Hamilton, 12th Duke of Hamilton . It is located near the shore in the center of the village. Further north is the building line 1–27 Hamilton Terrace , which was built in the late 19th century to a design by the Scottish architect John James Burnet .
