history
The island is associated with the 6th century monk Molaise of Leighlin ( Saint Molaise ) , who lived there in a cave on the west bank.
After a brief period of settlement, the population fell to zero by 1981. In 1991 the uninhabited island was bought by the Scottish Buddhists of the Tibetan Center Samye Ling , who still maintain a monastery there today. According to the 2011 census, 31 people live on the island.
