Political career

After Wilson was initially a member of the Labor Party , he moved to the Scottish National Party (SNP) in the late 1980s . In the 1997 British general election, Wilson first ran for national elections. He ran in the Glasgow Anniesland constituency and was clearly defeated by the Labor candidate and later First Minister , Donald Dewar . In the first Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999, Wilson stood in the constituency of Glasgow Maryhill , but could not prevail against the Labor politician Patricia Ferguson . He missed the direct mandate in both the 2003 general election in the Glasgow Maryhill constituency and in the 2005 general election in the Paisley and Renfrewshire North constituency .

In September 2003, Wilson stood up as a rival candidate to John Swinney in the election for party leader of the SNP. He lost to Swinney with 577: 111 votes. In the following general election in 2007 , he received only the third highest number of votes in his constituency of West Renfrewshire . However, since Wilson was placed in fourth place on the regional electoral list of the SNP for the electoral region West of Scotland , he received one of four list mandates for the SNP in this electoral region as a result of the election result and moved into the Scottish Parliament for the first time . Wilson did not run for the 2011 general election and left parliament at the end of the legislature.
