Political career

In 1974 Quinan joined the SNP. In the first Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999, Quinan ran for the direct mandate of the Dumbarton constituency , but was clearly defeated by the Labor candidate Jackie Baillie and thus missed the direct mandate of the constituency. Since Quinan was also placed at the top of the regional electoral list of the SNP for the electoral region West of Scotland , he received one of four list mandates for the SNP in this electoral region and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament . In the following general election in 2003 Quinan ran in the constituency of Motherwell and Wishaw and stood against First Minister Jack McConnell . He was clearly subject to this and left parliament. In December of the same year he left the SNP and joined Tommy Sheridan's SSP.
