Des McNulty (born July 28, 1952 in Stockport ) is an England- born Scottish politician and member of the Labor Party .

Life

McNulty attended St Bede's School in Manchester and then studied social sciences at York University . He then moved to Glasgow University to study politics. Between 1978 and 1991 McNulty worked as a sociology lecturer at the Glasgow College of Technology (now Glasgow Caledonian University ). He was then appointed deputy head of the Institute for Social Sciences there. Between 1997 and 1999 he was head of the university's strategic direction department. McNulty is married and is a father of three. Among other things, he is a member of the GMB union .

Political career

McNulty gained his first political experience as a member of the Strathclyde District Council , of which he was a member between 1990 and 1996. From 1995 to 1999 he was a member of the Glasgow City Council . In the first Scottish general election in 1999, McNulty first ran for national elections. He applied for the direct mandate of the constituency of Clydebank and Milngavie and was able to prevail with a clear lead over the SNP candidate. In November 2002 he was appointed Deputy Secretary of State for Social Justice, replacing his party colleague Margaret Curran . He defended his mandate in the parliamentary elections in 2003 and 2007 . In November 2006, McNulty was named Assistant Secretary of State for Local Services. Johann Lamont previously held this position. In the Labor Party's shadow cabinet of November 2007, he was designated Secretary of State for Transport. He later became shadow minister for education. In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 2011, McNulty was narrowly defeated by the SNP candidate Gil Paterson and left parliament.
