Gil Paterson (born November 11, 1942 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Scottish National Party .

Political career

Paterson joined the SNP in 1967. In 1973 he went into business for himself and ran his business until his election in 1999. Paterson first ran in the new elections in the Glasgow Central constituency in 1980 , but was clearly defeated by Labor candidate Robert McTaggart and thus missed entry into the House of Commons . Paterson ran again in new elections, this time in 1987 for the constituency of Strathkelvin and Bearsden . With a share of the vote of only 7.1%, however, he could not win this election either.

In the Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999 Paterson stood as a candidate for the SNP for the constituency Airdrie and Shotts , but was clearly defeated by Karen Whitefield of the Labor Party. On the basis of the election result, he moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament as an envoy from the electoral region of Central Scotland via the regional list . In the following parliamentary elections in 2003 he ran again for Airdrie and Shotts, but did not win the direct mandate with a share of the vote of 20.9%. Since only three candidates from the regional list for Central Scotland entered Parliament in these elections, the fourth-placed Paterson won no mandate this time. In 2007, Paterson ran for the constituency of Clydebank and Milngavie . Although he was able to increase the SNP's voting share there, he did not win the direct mandate against the Labor candidate Des McNulty . However, due to its placement on the regional list of the electoral region of West Scotland , he retained his parliamentary seat. At the 2011 parliamentary elections Paterson won the first time the direct mandate for Clydebank and Milngavie and defended it at the following elections 2016 .
