Political career

In 1994 Ballance ran for Strathclyde County Council , but only received around 5.7% of the vote. In the first Scottish general election in 1999, Ballance stood for the Scottish Green Party. However, he did not apply for a direct mandate from a constituency, but was placed on the first rank of the regional electoral list of the Greens for the electoral region South of Scotland . Since the Greens only received around 5.4% of the vote in these elections, they were unable to send a candidate to the newly created Scottish Parliament in this electoral region . In the parliamentary elections in 2003 , the Greens were able to slightly increase their share of the vote and Ballance received a mandate as first on the regional electoral list and moved into the Scottish Parliament for the first time. Ballance also led the list of Greens in the electoral region in the following parliamentary elections in 2007 , but they lost their mandate as a result of the election results. Ballance left Parliament at the end of the legislative period.
