Troon is a port town in South Ayrshire , Scotland with a population of 14,752. It is located about 50 kilometers southwest of Glasgow and marks the southern end of Irvine Bay .
history
The name of the city comes from a Pictish or British word (similar to the Welsh trwyn ), later it may have changed to the Scottish Gaelic An t-Sròn . However, reference to the latter name has only been found in the literature since 1932. In both languages, this means "projection" or "nose" and describes the cape on the Firth of Clyde , where the present port is located. However, only the Gaelic form of the name An Truthail has survived .
In the late 14th century, Dundonald Castle was built nearby as the residence of Robert II after previous structures had been destroyed. The place has been populated since the 5th century. Little is known about the origin of the settlement. It was mentioned in 1344, in 1707 it became a free port , which was expanded by the Duke of Portland. Until around 1800 it consisted only of a collection of small houses. In 1812, the first horse-drawn railroad in Scotland was built here to transport coal from the Duke's pits in Kilmarnock to the harbor.
As a result of the creation of the rail link to Irvine and Glasgow, the city began to grow rapidly at the end of the 19th century. A shipyard (1885), a ship demolition company and a railway repair plant as well as a salt extraction company were built here. The Scottish National Antarctic Expedition started from here in 1902 . Since the 1960s, the industry went under, but the port operations remained. Shipbuilding also ended in 1988, and in 2000 the Ailsa Shipbuilding Company was liquidated as a company. Today Troon is a ferry and fishing port. Unemployment is more than 20 percent.
