Softbank KK ( proper spelling : SoftBank , Japanese ソ フ ト バ ン ク 株式会社 Sofutobanku Kabushiki kaisha , English Softbank Corp. ), listed on the Nikkei 225 and based in Tokyo , is a Japanese telecommunications and media group with divisions in broadband television, landline telecommunications, e-commerce, Internet, robotics, technology service, finance, media and marketing. Softbank owns a number of other companies, such as the Japanese company Cable & Wireless IDC, the BB-Service company, and the computer game company GungHo Online Entertainment. In addition, it maintains partnerships with the Japanese branches of foreign companies such as Yahoo , E * Trade and Morningstar . Softbank also holds around 28% of the Alibaba Group (as of June 2016).

In 2018, the company's revenue was $ 82.64 billion and net income was $ 9.18 billion.

Softbank was founded on September 3, 1981 by the then 24-year-old Masayoshi Son . In January 2005, the company acquired the Japanese professional baseball team Fukuoka Daiei Hawks , henceforth Fukuoka Softbank Hawks.

Softbank and Apple jointly launched the iPhone 3G on the Japanese market in 2008 . On March 17, 2006, the company announced the acquisition of Vodafone's Japanese subsidiary . In early 2012, Softbank acquired around 80 percent of the shares in Aldebaran Robotics for around 100 million US dollars. In October 2012, Nextel and Softbank announced that Softbank would acquire a majority stake in the US wireless operator Sprint . It is the largest overseas acquisition a Japanese company has ever undertaken.

In July 2016, Softbank announced its intention to buy British chip developer ARM for around £ 23.4 billion (€ 27.95 billion). The acquisition was completed in September 2016. ARM should remain as an independent company and be increased in terms of personnel.

In 2017, Softbank took over the robotics company Boston Dynamics from Google's parent company Alphabet .

In December 2017, it was announced that Softbank intended to acquire around 15 percent of the shares in Uber . Uber founder Travis Kalanick then announced that he would also sell part of his shares. A deal worth $ 1.2 billion for a 30 percent stake in Uber was announced in mid-January 2018. In October 2018, Softbank and Toyota announced the formation of Monet Technologies as a joint venture . In November 2018, it was announced that Softbank, along with other investors, had invested $ 1 billion in Tokopedia .
