Morningstar Inc. is a NASDAQ- listed financial information and analytics company. It was founded in 1984 by Joe Mansueto in Chicago. It offers the data of approx. 500,000 shares, investment funds and other securities on its website . Furthermore, prices for approx. 4 million stocks, bonds, indices, futures , options, raw materials, precious metals, government bonds and currency rates are kept available in real time .

Asset planning and investment advisory services are also offered through subsidiaries. The rating agency Realpoint LLC , acquired by Morningstar Inc. in 2010, has been operating under the name Morningstar Credit Ratings since June 10, 2011 .

In 1984 Joe Mansueto founded Mutual Fund Sourcebook Inc. , which published a quarterly survey of 400 US mutual funds . Mutual Fund Sourcebook Inc.'s first year sales were approximately $ 100,000; this corresponds to around 3,000 copies of the printed fund study sold. After the 5-star rating for mutual funds was introduced in 1985, sales doubled to approximately US $ 200,000.

In 1986 the company name was in Morningstar Inc. changed.

Morningstar Inc. introduced new offerings in the area of financial analysis in the 1990s and expanded the scope to include approximately 1,700 investment funds examined.

In 1998, in a joint venture with Softbank Corp. Established the first foreign subsidiary in Tokyo under the name Morningstar Japan KK . In 1998, research was also expanded to include stocks and a paid investment newsletter was published under the title Morningstar StockInvestor .
