Lee Nguyen ( Vietnamese Lee Nguyễn ; born October 7, 1986 in Richardson , Texas ) is an American football player. He is a US citizen and a Vietnamese citizen.

Career

youth

Nguyen grew up in Dallas and played for the Dallas Texans Soccer Club, one of the elite youth soccer clubs in the country. During this time he was u. a. coached by former Iranian international Hassan Nazari, who is also the founder of the Texans. With the team he was able to win some tournaments, such as B. the Dallas Cup.

Nguyen played for several US youth national teams. He was the only high school player nominated for the 2005 Junior World Cup . During this time he played for the Indiana University team .

PSV Eindhoven

After several offers from abroad, he signed a contract with PSV Eindhoven in January 2006 , whose coach Guus Hiddink he noticed at the Junior World Championships. He made his debut in the honor division on February 11, 2006. In this game he wore the name "LEE" (and not Nguyen) on his jersey because there was already an "LEE" a few years ago, namely Lee Young Pyo from South Korea. PSV fans can therefore better identify with "LEE". That's why they started calling his name when he touched the ball in play.

Randers FC

On January 31, Lee signed a contract with the Danish first division club Randers FC until 2009. There he was rarely used.

Vietnam

On January 17, 2009, Lee Nguyen signed a $ 10,000 per month three-year contract with the Vietnamese first division club Hoàng Anh Gia Lai . In his very first game, a cup game, he scored a hat trick.

Due to a cooperation between HAGL and Arsenal London , he trained with the English over the summer of 2009.

For the 2010/11 season he moved to Becamex Bình Dương within the Vietnamese V-League . Before that, a commitment from FC Dallas had failed. On June 29, 2011, the contract between Nguyen and Becamex Bình Dương was terminated by mutual consent. He has been without a club since then.

Major League Soccer

On December 7, 2011 it was announced that Nguyen has signed a contract with Major League Soccer . The league started a lottery to determine which team he should play for. The Vancouver Whitecaps were awarded the contract on December 15, 2011. However, the Whitecaps sorted him out before the start of the 2012 season , so that the New England Revolution finally signed him.

In May 2018, Nguyen moved to Los Angeles FC within the MLS .

For the 2020 season, Nguyen switched to the new MLS franchise Inter Miami .

National team

His debut for the US national soccer team made Nguyen on June 2, 2007 in a friendly against China . He came on in the 80th minute. His first major tournament was the 2007 Copa America in Venezuela , where he played two games.

Seven years later he made his fourth international match for the USA in November 2014.
