Michael Jeffries (born May 20, 1962 in Lynn , Massachusetts ) is a former American football player and current coach.
Jeffries was active from 1984 to 1988 as a soccer player in the North American Soccer League and in the Major Indoor Soccer League . After an anterior cruciate ligament injury , he had to end his career in 1988. From 1984 to 1985 he played three times for the United States national soccer team .
He then became a coach and currently looks after Charlotte Independence in the third-tier United Soccer League .
Player career
college
Jeffries attended Duke University in Durham, North Carolina from 1980 to 1983 , where he also played for the college team Duke Blue Devils. In 1981 he took part in the Maccabiade in Israel for the USA . This is a sporting event for people of Jewish faith. In 1982 he reached the final of the NCAA Division I championship with Duke. The team was defeated here but against Indiana University . In 1983 Jeffries was inducted into the Division I First-Team All-Americans selection as one of the best college players in the country. He also received the Hermann Trophy, which is awarded annually to the best football player on a college team.
In addition to soccer, Jeffries earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and public policy . He later did his Masters at Tulane University .

After graduating from college, Jeffries played one season for the Minnesota Strikers in the North American Soccer League . After the NASL was dissolved in late 1984, the Striker moved to the Major Indoor Soccer League , an indoor soccer league . There he played until he was released from the Strikers in 1987.
On October 20, 1987, he moved to the Dallas Sidekicks, who also played in the MISL. For the Texans, he completed 33 games. In 1988 he had to end his career due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
National team
On November 30, 1984, he made his debut for the United States national soccer team in a game against Ecuador.
Coaching career
After his career as a player, he first worked as a financial advisor for Smith Barney in New Orleans . Three years later he decided to work in football again.
In 1993 he became an assistant coach and player at New Orleans Riverboat Gamblers, who played in what was then the United States Interregional Soccer League . In 1995 he became their head coach and in 1997 won the Central Conference. In 1998 he moved to the newly formed Major League Soccer franchise Chicago Fire and was assistant coach under Bob Bradley . With Chicago Fire he won the MLS Cup in 1998 and the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup in 1998 and 2000 .
On January 23, 2001 Jeffries was the new coach of Dallas Burn , who also play in the MLS. With Dallas he qualified twice for the play-offs, but failed both years in the quarterfinals. In 2003 the team could not qualify and Jeffries was released on September 15, 2003.
After his release, he stayed in Dallas and did an internship as an assistant coach at Southern Methodist University , where he accompanied the team during the 2004 season. In 2005 he went to the private Catholic university University of the Incarnate Word, which is located in San Antonio , Texas and was there coach of the Crusaders with whom he made it into the NCAA Division II tournament. In the end, the college team ended up in 23rd place. He was honored with the Heartland Conference Coach of the Year for his work .
In 2006 he returned to Duke University and became an assistant coach for the Blue Devils. In 2007, the previous coach, John Rennie, ended his career. Jeffries was not his successor, then he left Duke and was again assistant coach at Chicago Fire under coach Denis Hamlett .
In 2010, after Hamlett was fired, he worked as a scout for the US national team during the 2010 World Cup . After the tournament he returned to Chicago and became director of player personnel .
In January 2013 he took over the coaching position at Des Moines Menace, which play in the USL Premier Development League . On December 5, 2014, he was introduced as the new coach at Charlotte Independence .
