Youth career

Hertzog, who was born in the city of Reading, Pennsylvania, in the summer of 1990, grew up in the city of his birth next to his older sister Danielle and his parents Ralph and Susan Hertzog. There he attended the Antietam Middle Senior High School , also located in Reading, after elementary and middle school , where he played for the local men's soccer team. At the same time, Corey Hertzog, who had already devoted himself to football as a child, played for the local youth training association Rage Soccer Club , where he occasionally celebrated some successes. Throughout his high school years, the trained striker scored 107 championship goals, including becoming the top scorer in the U-14, U-15 and U-16 teams. In 2006 and 2007 he led the Berks County's top scorer list and was the captain and MVP of his team for two years at the same time . As a freshman he started for the single A State Champion Mountaineers , where he won a special honor. After his sophomore , junior and senior seasons, he was honored as an All-Berks Division IV and also made it to the Pennsylvania All-State team in his senior year . In addition to elections for High School Sports Magazine Player of the Year and Army Player of the Month , he was selected for the 2006 Super Y League North American Finals First Team . The goal-scoring young striker was also selected for the United Soccer Leagues Super Y League ODP National Camps for four consecutive years . After a successful high school career, the committed young striker began an equally successful career in the university's own men's soccer team in 2008 and admission to Pennsylvania State University .

With the Nittany Lions football team , as the Penn State sports division is also known, Hertzog was slow to find his way into his freshman year. With five appearances from the start and a total of 17 championship appearances over the course of the entire game, the former high school scorer was only able to score two goals by the end of the season. He scored his two goals in a single encounter, a 3-2 win over the Ohio State University team on October 11, 2008. During that year, he was voted "Player of the Week" by three different parties. The following sophomore year was a lot more promising for Corey Hertzog and his Nittany Lions than the previous season. The dangerous striker led the Big Ten in goals (11) and scorer points (28) and was otherwise very successful. He received several awards, such as the election to the Penn State Classic All-Tournament Team or the Big Ten Tournament All-Tournament Team . Other awards and honors this year included the choice of the Big Ten Tournament Offensive Most Valuable Player , the choice of the Second Team All-Big Ten or, as a team success, the choice of the team to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Men's College Team of the Season , including one honorable mention. Within the team, he ranked second in the categories “Assist”, “Shots” and “Shots on goal” with six assists, 66 shots and 30 shots on goal. While he only started in a few games in 2008, Hertzog advanced in 2009 a regular player in his team and started in his 22 missions in 17 matches. In the 2010 season, the goal-scoring attacker set several records and received numerous renowned awards and honors. Hertzog received national attention through his achievements in this game year, including from those responsible for Major League Soccer .

This year, Hertzog entered into an offensive partnership with his team partner, the Brazilian Matheus Braga, who contributed a total of 17 assists over the course of the season. However, the striker was also actively supported by his other teammates, and by the end of the game year he had a remarkable record of 20 goals, 46 points scorer, 2.09 points / game, 115 shots and 47 shots on goal. He led the National Collegiate Athletic Association in goals, scorer points and points per game clearly and also set a university record at Penn State, as no one before fired such a number of shots in a season. He set another record within the Big Ten Conference with his 20 hits, where he equalized a previous record. In addition to being named “Player of the Week” and “Team of the Week” twelve times, the 1.83 m tall attacker was also able to receive numerous other awards, including the election for the Wolstein Classic Tournament Most Valuable Player or the election for the Big Ten Player to Watch . After he was already represented in it the previous year, he was also elected to the Penn State Classic All-Tournament Team in 2010 and, as in the previous year, was also in the Big Ten Tournament All-Tournament Team of the year 2010. In addition, Corey Hertzog was unanimously into the First Team All- Big Ten was elected and was also represented in the Goal.com First Team National Team of the Season or the TopDrawerSoccer.com First Team National Team of the Season . In addition, the talented striker was named College Soccer News First Team All-American , Soccer America First Team MVP , Philly Soccer News Player of the Year , TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Season , NSCAA First Team All-Great Lakes Region or NSCAA Second Team All-American award. He was also a semi-finalist for the Hermann Trophy , which is awarded annually to the best male and female college football players.

Club career

Already during the season break at the university, Corey Hertzog played in the off-season with an American amateur club, in Hertzog's case with his home club Reading United in the USL Premier Development League (PDL), which is considered to be fourth class . In the PDL, he made four league appearances in 2009, although he only stood on the lawn for around 39 minutes and only fired two shots. With the team he ranked in the final standings of the 2009 game year in first place in the Mid Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference , which meant a place in the Divisional Finals , where the team, however, was knocked out 2-1 against the Cary Clarets . In 2010 Hertzog returned to the team and was able to celebrate the same success with the team as in the previous year. With the team, Hertzog won again, but with more stakes, the Mid Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference and was thus represented again in the finals. Reading United made it through the Conference Semifinals and Conference Finals to the PDL Semifinals , where the club lost 2-1 to the Portland Timbers U23s . The subsequent game for third place was decided in favor of the opponents after a 2-2 draw against Baton Rouge Capitals on penalties. This season Corey Hertzog was used in eight championship games, completed 515 league minutes, scored four goals, fired 20 shots and put forward one goal for his teammates. At Reading United he occasionally played on the position of midfielder .

On December 22, 2011, Corey Hertzog announced his intention to forego his senior year at Penn State in order to be eligible for the 2011 MLS SuperDraft . He also announced that he had signed a Generation Adidas contract. According to media reports, the Philadelphia Union worked on a so-called " Homegrown Player Contract " for Hertzog, before they failed with the contract; instead, the striker decided to join the draft. At the MLS SuperDraft 2011 he was drafted as the 13th pick in the first round to the New York Red Bulls after he was initially traded as one of the top candidates. The committed striker finally made his professional debut on March 26, 2011 in a 0-0 draw against the Columbus Crew , when he came onto the pitch for Luke Rodgers a few minutes before the end . Further championship appearances followed for the top youth player in May and June 2011, where he only acted as a substitute player; In a total of 19 other league games, Corey Hertzog sat on the bench for the Red Bulls without being used. On June 28, 2011 he played his first game from the start for the NYRBs when he also scored his first goal for the team in the 2-1 success in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup in 2011 over New York FC . After a place in the middle of the table in the 2011 final ranking , Hertzog, who was used in five league games throughout the season and only just under 35 minutes of play, could not really prevail in the 2012 game year . Instead, as was often the case in the previous game year, he was mostly used for the Red Bulls Reserves , the reserve team of the MLS franchise, in the MLS Reserve Division . In January 2013, he moved to league rivals Vancouver Whitecaps .
