Career

Career start at home

Jarad van Schaik was born on December 11, 1988 as the son of Roiann and Ted van Schaik in the city of Portland in the US state of Oregon. Growing up in the south-western suburb of Tualatin , his father, who was a fan of football, started playing football and was still enrolled in youth training clubs at a young age. He did the same in 2002 and 2006 with the training club FC Portland , where he was also a member of the school soccer team there during his high school years at Tualatin High School . With the Tualatin Timberwolves , the name of the high school sports department, he was a three-time letterman in his four years under coach Eric McClellan . Van Schaik was not the first future professional soccer player to attend Tualatin High when he graduated ; already Ian Fuller attended high school in the 1990s, as the elite player Courtney Verloo that from 2006 to 2009 the school. Shortly before starting his studies, he made it to the Far West Regionals with a team from FC Portland in 2007 . In his senior year 2006, in which he was elected MVP , among other things , he was elected to the All-State-First-Team and was in the All-Pac-6-Conference three times over the four high school years. First team . Furthermore, he led the Timberwolves three years in a row to starting places in the postseason, as well as to a league title in the game year 2006. In 2003 he was accepted into the Oregon Olympic Development Program (ODP) and played for this for several years.

Transfer to the University of Portland

In 2007 van Schaik began studying at the nearby University of Portland , where he chose Operations and Technology Management as his main course . At the same time, he was also a member of the men's soccer team at the Portland Pilots University Sports Department and played 21 championship games in his freshman years, 17 of which he was on the field from the start. He remained goalless himself, but was able to provide an assist for his teammates. Through his position in defensive midfield, he supported the defensive line. In his first year he was elected to the WCC All Freshman Team because of his achievements . In the following game year, 2008, van Schaik came back mainly as a "clearer" in midfield and brought it to 17 league appearances, 14 of them from the start. Again he went goalless, but contributed two assists. His offensive performance increased significantly in 2009 when he ran in 23 championship games in all of them from the start, scoring six goals himself and preparing another eight goals for his colleagues. At the end of his junior year, he was voted into the All-WCC First Team because of his performance . In the conference ranking, the offensive midfielder was second in the assists (8), fourth in the scorer points (20) and seventh in the goals scored (6). He played a remarkable game against the Gonzaga University team , when he scored two goals, including the decisive one, and prepared two more goals in a 5-1 win.

In his final senior year 2010, he was able to expand his offensive performance again, where he scored eight goals and made three assists in 16 missions, all of them from the start. This made him the most successful player in the Portland Pilots this season in terms of goals and scorer points. As in the previous game year, van Schaik was elected to the All-WCC First Team in 2010. During the game-free times of his college career, van Schaik was also used in the lower-class North American amateur area. In 2009 and 2010 he played 15 championship games across all seasons, in which he scored once, for the Portland Timbers U23s with play in the fourth-rate USL PDL . His only goal came in the 2-2 draw against the Victoria Highlanders in the first competitive game in the team's young history, when he scored the 1-1 equalizer in the 34th minute after Matt Van Houten and thus the first competitive match scored in the team's history. The template for the 2-2 equalization came from van Schaik.

Start into professional football

Van Schaik came to the Major League Soccer franchise Real Salt Lake via the MLS SuperDraft 2011 as the 51st overall pick in the third round and took part with the team in the preparation for the 2011 game year . In the Salt Lake City , Utah franchise , he met his friend and former college colleague Collen Warner , who was starting his sophomore year on the team. After van Schaik, who was scheduled as a defender, was subsequently not offered a contract, he had to leave the team again and was used for the franchise Puerto Rico Islanders in the North American Soccer League , the second highest division in the North American league system. He made his professional debut on May 14, 2011, when he came on the lawn in the 58th minute of the game for David Foley in a 7-0 victory over the Walking Bout Company in the 2011 CFU Club Championship . After this mission, he remained out of action in the semi-finals and only came back to a 19-minute short mission in the final final against Tempête FC from Haiti , which the Islanders could only win in extra time. Shortly after his professional debut in the Caribbean Club Championship, van Schaik also made his league debut on May 18, 2011, when he played from the start in the 2-2 draw against Minnesota Stars FC and from coach Colin Clarke in the 70th minute was replaced by Matthew Bouraee . Throughout the season, he made a total of 14 league appearances, scoring two goals. His first professional league goal he succeeded on July 17 in a 1-0 away win over the aforementioned Minnesota Stars FC; in the following round, three days later, he scored another goal. In the final ranking of the debut year of the North American Soccer League he reached a second place in the table with the Puerto Rico Islanders in regular time and was eliminated in the final play-offs only in the semifinals against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers .

After Colin Clarke left the team at the end of the season for league rivals Carolina RailHawks and his previous assistant coach Adrian Whitbread took over the coaching of the Puerto Rico Islanders, van Schaik remained in the regular formation in the 2012 game year . With the team he reached only a third place after a double win of the Caribbean Club Championship at the CFU Club Championship 2012 , where he was used in all four games of his team. In the subsequent CONCACAF Champions League 2012/13, for which the team had qualified due to third place in the Caribbean Club Championship, the team was eliminated from the current tournament in the group stage after finishing second behind MLS Franchise in Group 5 Los Angeles Galaxy finished. In the previous Champions League season, the Islanders were eliminated in the qualifying round, the so-called Preliminary Round , due to the away goals rule against AD Isidro Metapán from El Salvador . In league action in 2012, it brought the team in the final regular time into third place in the standings and had it four points behind on rank two and six points behind at No. 1. In the final play-offs, the Islanders still eliminated in the quarterfinals against the Minnesota Stars with 1: 2 off. Since the team was already struggling with financial problems at this time and, after first half of the season and soon after that the entire subsequent season was suspended and the official end of the franchise soon became clear, a large part of the squad left at the end of the 2012 season Franchise.

Switch to the Charleston Battery

Van Schaik switched to Charleston Battery with games in the USL Professional Division , the third highest North American professional league. At the reigning champions, he was employed as a regular player by coach Michael Anhaeuser right from the start and was initially also in action for the full game. This decreased somewhat in the further course of the season, although he was mostly still on the pitch as a regular from the beginning and was comparatively seldom short-term. At the end of the USL Professional Division 2013 , he had made 23 appearances in the 26 regular-time games and ranked third with the team. In the season-closing play-offs, Charleston Battery made it to the semi-finals after a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Blues , where the team finally suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat against Orlando City . The 2013 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup was no less successful for the franchise , in which, after a narrow 1-0 win over fourth division Portland Timbers U23s in the first game, in the second game, the third cup round, the MLS franchise San José Earthquakes also defeated 1-0. In the following fourth round, the round of 16, the team met again on a Major League Soccer team and only lost on penalties against Real Salt Lake . Van Schaik played through all three games and, among other things, provided a template for the last appearance against the team from Salt Lake City .

In the 2014 game year , the defensive midfielder was again able to prove himself as a regular player and was used in all 28 games of regular time from the start, scoring two goals. With the team, he ranked 5th in the final table and did not make it in the play-offs beyond the quarter-finals when they lost to the Richmond Kickers in extra time. In addition, van Schaik was used in one of the two Charleston Battery cup games in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2014 , when he and the team only beat Orlando City U. in the third round after a spectacular penalty shoot-out (11:12) -23 subject. Jarad van Schaik started the game year 2015 as team captain and was so successful at the beginning of the game year that he was often elected to the USL Team of the Week . Over the entire season he was used by Michael Anhaeuser again in all 28 games of the regular season from the beginning and this time contributed one goal and three assists. In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup 2015 , the team did not get past the fourth round, the round of 16; van Schaik played in two of his team's three games and scored one goal in the last game.

Return to the second class

Even before Shawn Ferguson was named the new captain of the Battery, van Schaik made a move to the next higher division and in February 2016 switched to the new Rayo OKC franchise , which started in the North American Soccer League in 2016 . In the NASL he was not considered by coach Alen Marcina in the first two games of the season and sat on the substitute bench without being used. Only in the third championship game did the Canadian use it from the start and for the full length of the game. After another 90-minute assignment in the fourth championship round, Marcina hardly considered him anymore. In the further course of the spring season he was no longer in the squad in two games, sat unused on the bench in three games and came in a fourth game on the bench for a short stint lasting a few minutes. He finished the spring championship with the team in eighth of eleven places. In the fall season he was used by coach Alen Marcina in the first game from the start and for the full duration of the game. In this 1-1 home draw against Edmonton FC , he provided the template for Robbie Findley's goal. At Charleston Battery he was mostly in the left and defensive midfield, but he was invariably used as a left-back at Rayo OKC. But even after this supposed breakthrough in the team, long-term assignments in the NASL were largely absent. So he mostly sat on the substitute bench without being used or only made a few short assignments. He only found his breakthrough in the team after a coach change in August, when the Canadian Alen Marcina was followed by the Spaniard Gerard Nus . Initially with only one substitute player, he found his way back to the regular formation several times from the end of August 2016 and was placed in the starting line-up as a left-back, especially from the end of September 2016. He was in six of the last seven championship games over the full game and completed half-time in the seventh game. With a fourth of the meanwhile twelve places in the fall season , Rayo OKC also made it to fourth place in the overall table and was allowed to compete in the play-offs at the end of the season. There the team lost in the semifinals to the eventual champions New York Cosmos with 1: 2. Subsequently, coach Nus left the franchise in order to continue his - and only temporarily interrupted - career as assistant to the technical director at Rayo Vallecano .

Back to Charleston Battery

After this game year in Oklahoma City , van Schaik was without a club and only returned to Charleston Battery in the summer of 2017, during the current game year . The league had received a second division status from the United States Soccer Federation before the start of the game year and was no longer considered a third division from this year. In the league, which was a second-highest of two divisions this year in addition to the North American Soccer League, which was dissolved at the end of the season, it brought van Schaik to eleven championship appearances and ranked at the end of his team with eight points behind Louisville City on second place in the Eastern Conference in the regular season. In the subsequent play-offs, the midfielder and his team were eliminated in the first round after a 4-0 defeat by New York Red Bulls II . Van Schaik then kept Charleston Battery under contract in 2018 . After a fourth place in the final ranking of the Eastern Conference - van Schaik had made 24 league appearances by then - Charleston Battery was eliminated in the play-offs again in the first round against the second professional team of the New York Red Bulls.

Van Schaik, who was mainly a defensive midfielder, was increasingly active as a core player in the following game year 2019 , when he played in 32 of 34 possible league games and scored three goals. At the end of the regular season he finished 9th with Charleston Battery and only made it through the play-in round, which was played for the first time this year, to move into the season-closing play-offs, in which the team was again defeated in round 1 - this time in the Conference Quarterfinals against Nashville SC . Van Schaik, who was voted Nigel Cooper Most Valuable Player at the end of the 2019 regular season , played in both the play-in and play-off matches of his team. On January 20, 2020, the franchise announced that versatile van Schaik will also be a member of Charleston Battery in the USL Championship 2020 .
