The first North American Soccer League season began on April 9, 2011 with the start of the regular season and ended on October 29 with the second leg of the final of the play-offs. The Minnesota Stars emerged as the first winner , who prevailed against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the final .
In early 2011, the USSF's permission to appear as the country's second division was withdrawn. The reasons for this were the league's financial instability. On February 12, the permit was granted again on a provisional basis.
Competition format
The first season starts with eight teams. These only play out the regular season, which has a uniform table structure. In total, each team plays 28 games, which are divided into home and away games. One team meets the other team four times. The winner of the regular season receives the Woosnam Cup.
The top six teams qualify for play-offs, with the top two teams qualifying directly for the semi-finals. The remaining four play off the other two semi-finalists. The semi-finals and the final will be played in two games.
