The North American Soccer League 2013 is the third North American Soccer League season. It begins on April 6, 2013 with the first day of the Spring Season and ends in November 2013 with the championship final.

Competition format

The format of the competition is not unchanged compared to the first two seasons. In early September 2012, the NASL approved a competition reform for the 2013 season with a large majority. In the first two seasons a team in the regular season had to play one home and one away game against every other team and the six best teams played the championship title in the play-offs. Starting with the 2013 season, two independent six-month competitions will be held in one year: the Spring Season in the first half of the year and the Fall Season in the second half of the year. As in the past in the regular season, each team must compete in a home and away game against the other teams. The two champions of the two half-year competitions meet after the end of the fall season in a final game in which the champion of the 2013 season is determined. The final game will take place in the stadium of the champions of the spring season. If one and the same team wins both half-year competitions, it will play against the team that has collected the second most points over the entire year.

In contrast to the previous season, the third season should start with nine teams. New York Cosmos was to become a new member of the NASL . In early December 2012, however, the franchise announced that the team would not compete until the 2013 fall season. Almost three weeks later, the club Puerto Rico Islanders FC announced that they would only participate in the NASL in the fall 2013 season and pause in the 2013 spring season. As a reason, the club cited the reorganization of business activities. In February 2013 it was announced that the Islanders were also pausing the 2013 fall season and would not return to play until 2014. This means that only seven franchises will participate in the 2013 spring season, but eight in the 2013 fall season.
