Jason Andrew Bent (born August 3, 1977 in Toronto ( Scarborough ), Ontario ) is a retired Canadian soccer player . In 2006 he had to end his career due to a serious knee injury.

He is currently an assistant coach at Toronto Football Club .

Club career

Bent began his career on the University of Maryland soccer team . In just under two years he ran 24 times for his team and was able to celebrate the championship title in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship in 2006.

Year of apprenticeship in Germany

In 1997 he took part with Canada in the Junior World Championships in Malaysia , which paved the way for him to Europe. The then coach of FSV Zwickau , Heinz Werner , had seen the preliminary round match between Canada and Argentina on television. Canada lost the game against their overpowering opponents 2-1, but Werner, who was known as a talent promoter, had noticed two Canadian talents with Bent and Dwayne De Rosario , which he now wanted to sign. So it happened that both signed a contract for the 1997/98 season with the then German second division club.

As a result, Bent received a lot of working time under Werner and became a kind of fan favorite due to his committed style of play. Within the team, however, he had to contend with hostility. The core of the team, largely composed by the former successful coach Gerd Schädlich, had grown together over the years and showed little willingness to integrate the young Canadian. When the club got deep into the relegation battle and Werner was replaced by Charly Körbel , Bent had almost no playing time. At the end of the season, Zwickau rose as the penultimate in the regional league, whereupon Bent left the club again and moved to the still young Major League Soccer to the Colorado Rapids .

Top performers in the MLS

Even before his arrival in Colorado, he was showered with advance praise in a press release by the club, which increased the pressure on the young player to succeed. Contrary to expectations, Bent got along with it and immediately became a top performer. In three seasons he reached the quarter-finals of the play-offs with the Rapids and the final of the US Cup competition in 1999 , which they lost 2-0 to the Rochester Raging Rhinos from the second-class USL First Division . Despite his undisputed status as a regular in Colorado, Bent was dissatisfied with the MLS's many years of mediocrity. He also wanted to go back to Europe and therefore turned down several offers from MLS teams and joined the Danish top team FC Copenhagen during the European winter transfer period.

Return to Europe

Previously, a long trial period at the English first division AFC Sunderland had not led to a contract being signed. In Copenhagen, which were leaders in the Superliga , he stayed for three months before he left the club without having played an official game. There were several rumors about the reasons for the premature termination of the contract, but since neither Bent nor the club officially commented on it, speculation remained.

With the European transfer window already closed, Bent remained without a club until the summer of 2001. The search for a club turned out to be extremely difficult, even in the summer, as Bent had not had any match experience for months and was in poor physical condition. Nevertheless, he didn't want to go back to the United States, but rather try his luck in England. Only through the mediation of his long-time national team mate Carlo Corazzin did he come to a trial training with the then English division three team Plymouth Argyle , which then signed him. Instead of the Premier League , he was then used in the 4th English league, in which he became one of the best players. In his first season with the Pilgrims , he managed with the club the undisputed championship title in Division Three and the associated promotion to the third division. There the team played with Bent as captain in the first year for a long time for promotion to the Football League Championship and reached the good 8th place in the table at the end of the season. In the following season one managed the championship title in Football League One and the associated second promotion in three years. Bent had a significant share in the first half of the season in the soaring of his team, but was the entire second half of the season due to a serious knee injury sustained during an international match for Canada in November 2003. When he was still unable to play for the 2004/05 season, his contract with Plymouth was dissolved. The injury caused controversy between Plymouth club officials and FIFA , as Plymouth sought compensation for Bent's failure. Before that, there had been differences between Plymouth and FIFA over the release of the player for friendly matches for the Canadian national team - which Bent was able to resolve by voluntarily waiving them. The claim was supported by the powerful G-14 , but was unsuccessful despite the verdict in the process surrounding the player Abdelmajid Oulmers and his club Sporting Charleroi .

The "Lipa" scandal

In addition to the dispute, a tangible scandal caused a stir this season. In the game against Port Vale , the Austrian defense chief Andreas Lipa had allowed himself to be carried away with a racist statement after a duel with Bent. Bent made the derailment of Lipa public, which caused a bitter media coverage. Ironically, the incident also happened during the League's official week of anti-racism action, which made the case even more explosive in the media and publicized across the country. As a result, Lipa officially apologized to Bent and underlined that his statement was not excusable, but that he had made it in the heat of the moment and was in no way racist. If he could, he would turn back time. Lipa also paid a fine that was used for the league's anti-racism campaign. Bent accepted Lipa's apology, whereupon media interest subsided again. Due to the reconciliation between Lipa and Bent and the fact that the players and the club refrained from further steps, the proceedings previously initiated by the FA against Lipa were also discontinued.

Final end of career

Bent made two comeback attempts in a row at the Scottish club Motherwell FC and the Swedish Halmstads BK , but they failed. In April 2006, he then declared his final career end. He had tried everything to be able to play football professionally again, but the knee injury was so severe that another attempt at comeback made no sense.

National team

Bent first made a name for himself among Canada's U-20 national team during the 1997 Junior World Cup in Malaysia . Canada was drawn into a group with Australia, Hungary and Argentina, in which they were classified as blatant outsiders. After a 0-0 win against Australia in the opening game, they offered a strong performance in the 1: 2 defeat against the Argentine U-20 selection, peppered with players such as Pablo Aimar , Esteban Cambiasso and Juan Román Riquelme , in which Bent had the radius of action Riquelme was able to successfully minimize. This was followed by a 2-1 win against Hungary, which meant the surprising promotion to the play-offs. There they were eliminated from the tournament by a 2-0 defeat against Spain.

He celebrated his greatest success with the Canadian national soccer team in 2000 when he surprisingly won the CONCACAF Gold Cup . In the final, they defeated the favored Colombia 2-0.

This was followed by third place at the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2002 and participation in the Confederation Cup 2001 , where he was eliminated in the preliminary round before he had to end his career due to a serious knee injury sustained in a friendly international match against Ireland .

In total, he completed 32 international matches without scoring for Canada.
