The FC Motherwell (officially: Motherwell Football Club ) - also known as The Steelmen or The Well - is a traditional football club from Scotland . The club plays its home games at Fir Park in Motherwell in North Lanarkshire . The team is currently playing in the Scottish Premiership .
history
Motherwell FC was founded on May 17, 1886 through the merger of the two corporate football clubs Glencairn and Alpha. In 1893 the team joined the newly formed Scottish Football League Second Division and defeated Hamilton Academical 4-1 in their first game . In 1895 Motherwell moved to the newly built Fir Park Stadium .
In 1912, FC Motherwell changed its shirt colors: the colors "claret" and "amber" ( red Bordeaux and amber ) became the club's trademark. After the First World War , the club had its strongest period under coach John 'Sailor' Hunter . The club reached the final of the Scottish Cup in 1931, 1933 and 1939 and won the championship in 1931/32. Willie MacFadyen scored 52 goals for Motherwell FC this championship season, which is still a Scottish record today.
In 1950 and under the leadership of George Stevenson , Motherwell defeated Hibernian Edinburgh in the Scottish League Cup final 3-0 after goals from Archie Kelly, Willie Watters and Jim Forrest. In the same season they also reached the final of the Scottish FA Cup , but lost here against Celtic Glasgow . Just two years later, Motherwell was back in the Cup final, this time defeating Dundee 4-0 after goals from Wilson Humphries, Archie Kelly, Willie Redpath and Jimmy Watson.
1955 took Bobby Ancell as coach and formed a team than the Ancell Babes became known, with players like Charlie Aitken, Ian St John and Pat Quinn.
In 1968 Motherwell had to move into the third division ( Scottish Second Division ), but fought for immediate promotion the next season. In the years that followed, the team was trained by Willie McLean, Roger Hynd, Ally McLeod, David Hay, Jock Wallace and Bobby Watson. It was not until Tommy McLean , who took over the coaching post in 1984, that the team made it to the Scottish Premier Division in the first season .
In 1991 Motherwell again won the Scottish FA Cup. In the final they defeated Dundee United 4-3 after goals from Phil O'Donnell , Stevie Kirk, Iain Ferguson and Ian Angus.
The 2002/03 season ended the club on the last place in the table, which would have meant relegation. However, since the stadium of the potential promoter FC Falkirk did not meet the requirements of the Premiere League, Falkirk was denied promotion and Motherwell was able to keep the class at the green table.
In the 2004/05 season Motherwell reached a final in the Scottish League Cup after more than 50 years. Here they had to admit defeat to Glasgow Rangers 1: 5.
On the last day of the 2004/05 season Motherwell beat leaders Celtic and thus ensured the Rangers title win.
A tragedy befell the club on December 29, 2007, when captain Phil O'Donnell collapsed on the pitch against Dundee United and died on the way to the hospital.
