Lee Henry McCulloch (born May 14, 1978 in Bellshill , North Lanarkshire ) is a Scottish football player .

Career

McCulloch played for Cumbernauld United during his youth , where he played with Barry Ferguson . In the summer of 1995 he was signed by Motherwell FC . The then center forward played there until 2001 and scored 21 goals in 123 games. He made his debut on August 24, 1996 against the Raith Rovers . On January 31, 1998, he scored his first two goals in a game against Hibernian Edinburgh . He was able to convince through his achievements and other clubs took notice of him.

In March 2001, he moved to Wigan Athletic . The transfer fee was £ 700,000, which at the time meant a new transfer record for Wigan. The English club was playing in England's third highest league at the time. On March 3, 2001, McCulloch played for his new team for the first time. Four weeks later he scored his first goal. During his time in England he changed more and more from the position of the striker to that of the midfielder. He held this position during his first Premier League season in 2004/2005 and finished 10th with Wigan at the end of the season.

In January 2007, Glasgow wanted to buy Rangers McCulloch for £ 750,000. Wigan turned down the offer on the grounds that it was "ridiculous". In May 2007, McCulloch said he would like to play for Rangers and the new Wigan Athletic coach gave him permission to go back to Scotland. On June 23, 2007, the Rangers increased their offer to £ 1.5 million. Wigan did not agree to that either. They wanted £ 2.5 million.

On July 11, 2007, McCulloch joined the Glasgow Rangers £ 2.25 million. In his first game for Rangers, he scored a goal against FK Zeta Golubovci . In the 2007/2008 UEFA Champions League season, he scored the first goal in a 3-0 win over Olympique Lyon . McCulloch became more and more a fixture in the Rangers midfield. In the 2009/2010 season he held a regular position and on August 12, 2010 extended his contract to 2013.

In summer 2015 he switched to FC Kilmarnock , where he is also part of the coaching team.

National team

McCulloch played his first international match for the Scottish national football team in October 2004. He was substituted on in the game against Moldova . This was also Berti Vogts' last game as coach of the national team. Under new coach Walter Smith, McCulloch played as a regular in the next three games. His first tournament was the Kirin Cup , which he was able to win with the team.

On September 8, he announced his resignation from the national team, as he wanted to concentrate more on the work in the club.
