Hans Beller

Hans Beller (born December 25, 1947 in Stuttgart ) is a German author , film director and lecturer at several film and art schools. He is also a training partner and coach for television professionals for the ARD.ZDF media academy, as well as BR, SWR, WDR, ZDF and others.

life and work

His books and essays on the subject of film perception and film montage , in particular the “Handbook of Filmmontage - Practice and Principles of Film Editing”, are standard literature for filmmakers.

After studying at the University of Television and Film Munich from 1968 to 1971, he completed a degree in psychology, which he completed with a thesis on film perception. In addition to his work as a director and author (especially in the documentary area), he increasingly deepened his film studies from 1981.

Teaching assignments (selection)

  • 1991–1997: Professor of film and cultural history, aesthetics and semiotics at the Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences in the scenography course.
  • 1991–1998: Lecturer at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy for film history and media theory.
  • 1998–2001: Professor of Film at the State University for Design in Karlsruhe.
  • 2001–2006: Professor for television practice at the Art Academy for Media Cologne.
  • Since October 2006: Professor at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy with teaching assignments in film history, analysis and editing.
  • In addition, he often works as a guest lecturer at other film and media schools.
