Andreas Lipa (born April 26, 1971 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian football player and now coach .

Club career

Career start in Vienna

Lipa began his career in the youth team at Post SV Wien before moving to First Vienna FC at the age of 17 . In the 1989/90 season, the then coach Ernst Dokupil brought him into the professional team, for which he came to three short appearances in the second half of the season. This was followed by one and a half seasons, in which he did not get past established players like Jiří Ondra , Kurt Russ or Leopold Lainer and only completed a total of 15 missions.

When the team disintegrated due to excessive spending in the past, the 1991/92 season struck its hour. As a defensive all-rounder he was valued by coach Peter Leitl for his versatility and practically had a regular place for three seasons, albeit in different positions. However, the season was disastrous for the club. Due to the financial problems, Vienna President Heinz Hawelka simply "leased" a colorful group of mostly young talents who were only competitive to a limited extent in order to save costs. After 22 rounds you had the penultimate place in the 1st division and had to go into the relegation round. There they missed out against their eternal rival Wiener Sportklub , only because of the worse goal difference, and had to relegate to the 2nd division after 6 years. Along with Ivica Vastić , who made a lasting impression with 6 goals in 11 games, Lipa was one of the few winners of the season. Due to his strong performances, he had drawn the attention of coach icon Otto Barić to himself and subsequently switched to the ambitious runner-up SV Austria Salzburg .

Substitute bench in Salzburg

With the then top team Salzburg, he had a difficult time again. In the title fight, Barić relied heavily on established players, Christian Fürstaller or his former Vienna teammate Lainer, whereby Lipa only came to three missions with one goal. At the end of the season they were tied for runners-up behind Vienna's Austria.

Without the prospect of a regular place, he and Herfried Sabitzer were drawn to Linz ASK, who had just been relegated from the 1st division . At LASK he came under coach Walter Skocik in the first half of the 1993/1994 season to 9 missions in the 2nd division, but without shining. In an unsatisfactory situation for the club and the players, he then dared to take the step to become the most promising candidate for promotion in the Regionalliga West , SC Austria Lustenau .

High phase in Lustenau and Graz

In the Ländle, he built on old achievements from Vienna times. In his first half year at Lustenau he was able to celebrate the championship title in the Regionalliga West and the associated promotion to the 2nd division. Already in the first year in the 2nd league they played for promotion, which was largely thanks to Lipa's strong performance. As a defensive player, he scored 7 goals in 26 season appearances. After an average season in 1995/96, in which the team was exiled for almost three quarters of the season due to the renovation of the Reichshof Stadium and thus robbed of the home advantage, the team was strengthened for the season 1996/97 with players like Helgi Kolviðsson and Tamás Tiefenbach , Roger Prinzen or Samuel Koejoe , which resulted in a significant increase in quality. Lustenau was the measure of all things in the 2nd division throughout the season and in the end was sovereign champion with a five-point lead over Vorwärts Steyr . This made the club first class for the first time in its history. Lipa had a large share in the rise thanks to strong performances and had become a kind of Lustenauer player icon over the years.

Acted as a permanent relegation before the season, they managed to stay ahead of the game as the penultimate, 10 points ahead of relegated VfB Admira Wacker Mödling . Lipa had already left the club in the winter transition period and switched to the then top club Grazer AK . Lipa was noticed by the new GAK trainer Klaus Augenthaler , who was just about to form a team according to his ideas.

This was followed by five consistently successful years, in which he took third place in the Bundesliga four times with the club and won the Austrian Cup twice and the Supercup just as often. Furthermore, he gained international experience through regular European Cup matches and came to an international match for Austria under his former coach Otto Barić in 2000 . Until the 2001/02 season he was a regular player and in the 1998/99 season, in which he scored five goals, he probably had his best playing time at GAK. Under the unhappy acting GAK coach Thijs Libregts , he briefly lost his regular place in the 2001/02 season and was also thrown back by several small injuries.

Years abroad

For the 2002/03 season he ventured abroad and moved to AO Xanthi in Greece . For the club, where Günter Friesenbichler and Jürgen Leitner had two other Austrians under contract, he played 14 season games without scoring. As in the previous year, he had a few minor injuries. After a season he left the club and tried his luck in England .

In January 2002, a move to the then championship club Portsmouth FC had only just failed.

On June 18, 2003, he signed a contract with the Football League One team FC Port Vale . He was greeted euphorically at the traditional English club. The fact that Lipa, a former national player from Austria with experience in the first division, would play for Port Vale brought high expectations. The manager at the time, Brian Horton , presented him as a star purchase for the season and announced in the press that they had brought in a "high-quality" player who could already have shown himself to be at the highest level. As a result, Lipa was able to meet the expectations and advanced to the surprise of the season with the Valiants . The team, which was treated as an underdog, played the entire season for promotion and only missed qualifying for the promotion play-offs due to the poorer goal difference against Hartlepool United . Lipa showed extremely strong performances throughout the season, had an undisputed regular place and scored two goals in 30 appearances.

At the beginning of the following season he was seriously injured and was out for a long time. He then fought his way back, but lost his form and injured himself again. He was released in November 2004. In a statement by the club it was announced that the notoriously financially weak Port Vale had to take this step because Lipa would be the club's best earner and one could not afford to keep injured players.

Racism scandal

During his time in England he caused a scandal: on October 18, 2003, in the league game against Plymouth Argyle , he let himself be carried away to make a racist statement against his colored opponent Jason Bent . Bent made the derailment of Lipa public, which led to a great public discussion. The incident happened during the league's anti-racism action week, which made the case even more explosive in the media and publicized across the country. As a result, Lipa apologized to Bent and underlined that his statement was not excusable, but that he had made it in the heat of the moment and was in no way racist. If he could, he would turn back time. Lipa also paid a fine that was used for the league's anti-racism campaign. Bent accepted Lipa's apology, whereupon media interest subsided again. Due to the reconciliation between Lipa and Bent and the fact that the players and the club refrained from further steps, the proceedings previously initiated by the FA against Lipa were also discontinued.

In January 2005, a league-internal move to the Wycombe Wanderers failed due to the club's ailing financial situation.

Return to Austria

He then decided to return to Austria and signed again with Austria Lustenau . As a result, Lipa again offered appealing performances and together with Daniel Ernemann formed one of the strongest central defenses in the league. Nevertheless, the highly ambitious team missed promotion to the Bundesliga in the 2004/05 season with fourth place in the table and the 2005/06 season with third place, whereupon the club was restructured, which also included a rejuvenation of the team. In addition, Lipa had already quarreled with the then Lustenau trainer Heinz Fuchsbichler during the season, which meant that they were saying goodbye to Lustenau. In the summer of 2006, his contract was no longer renewed and Lipa left Lustenau. Without Lipa Lustenau had a pronounced defensive problem in the 2006/07 season and again missed promotion despite a strong offensive. Already in November 2006, Lustenau President Hubert Nagel admitted in an interview with Vorarlberger Nachrichten that not extending Lipa would have been a wrong decision and that it should have been held for another year.

In the meantime, Lipa decided to return to Vienna at the age of 36 and signed with the Vienna Sports Club . At that time the value chain was running an immense financial outlay in order to manage the promotion to the first division . In the 2006/07 season, alongside Lipa, players such as Osman Bozkurt , Diego Viana and Markus Holemar were also under contract. Despite this star-studded squad, the season ended with a disappointing fourth place in the table. As a result, almost all of the expensive players were replaced. Lipa, who was able to convince as a sovereign defense chief, was one of the few who stayed. But the player changes did not bring the desired success either and the WSK again only finished 4th in the table. When the Dornbachers saw savings for the first time in the 2008/09 season , Lipa switched to SV Wienerberg within the league .

Since then, Lipa has been bringing his career to a close with the club sponsored by Magna . Due to its proximity to Magna and Austria, the team is regarded as a training club for AKA Austria Wien graduates , making Lipa one of the few older players to take on the position of veteran. At the end of the 2008/09 season he finished 7th in the table with the club.

After switching to the lower-class SC Lassee at the beginning of February 2010 , he spent exactly three years there, before he changed clubs again, around three months before his 42nd birthday, and joined SV Mischendorf / Neuhaus from southern Burgenland , whereupon he ended his active career in the summer of 2013.

National team

After strong performances in the league for the GAK , Lipa suddenly became a topic for the Austrian national team at the age of 29 . On April 26, 2000, he came then, precisely on his 30th birthday, under team boss Otto Barić for his debut in the friendly against Croatia . The game was lost with 1: 2, Lipa came on for Günther Neukirchner in minute 67 .

As a result, Lipa was no longer considered for the national team and it remained with a mission without a goal.

Coaching career

After he became head of the youth department at Vienna in February 2013, he was also the coach of the club's second combat team from summer 2014 to the end of April 2015. Subsequently, he took over the agendas of the first fighting team after the previous coach Hans Slunecko had been dismissed. In January 2017 he became coach of the first-class Northwest -Vereines 1. FC Bisamberg .

In April 2017 he became coach of the second division club SC Austria Lustenau , for whom he had already played as a player from 1994 to 1997 and from 2005 to 2006. In September 2017 the Lustenauer parted from Lipa. In December 2017 he became the trainer of the fourth class SV Stripfing .

Private life

Lipa is married to Sarah Adams-Lipa from England. She has a doctorate in criminology and a bachelor's degree in applied psychology. Among other things, she is currently active as an English teacher in referee courses for the ÖFB .

In 2006, in an article in the English Times , she criticized the generalization of footballer's women in the English press. Reinforced by the television series Footballers' Wives , there was more and more one-sided reporting about the so-called WAG`S ( wives and girlfriends of high-profile football players ). Adams-Lipa was cited as a counterexample because of her professional training and criticized, among other things, that in England when it comes to female beauty, intelligence is completely ignored:

“There is a core of truth to the stereotype, but you also need to remember that footballers don't have a reputation for being particularly intelligent. Maybe like - like attracts. However, there are enough women footballers who have learned a trade and are aware that they may be the breadwinner after their husbands career. "

In 2008 she appeared in an episode of the highly successful show "Come Dine With Me" in England, the original version of " The Perfect Dinner ", which is known in German-speaking countries . The broadcaster marketed her as "WAG" (title of the show: A Real Footballer's Wife ) and presented her in precisely the situations she criticized in a 2006 Times interview. Some excerpts from the station's official press release about the episode:

" Sarah goes on a two-hour tour of an elegant department store where grocery shopping is not her priority and the distraction from designer clothes is almost catastrophic for the evening " or
" Will Sarah win the £ 1000 prize." ? After all, she needs a new pair of Gucci shoes - and a matching handbag wouldn't hurt either ! ""

Due to the Jason Bent scandal and the appearance of his wife on English television, Lipa has a considerable degree of notoriety despite his rather mediocre career in England.

In 2009, the couple was again in the media as injured parties in the case of the billionaire fraudster Allen Stanford .
