Markus Holemar (born June 16, 1976 in Vienna ) is an Austrian football player . He is currently ending his amateur career at SC Wolfsthal. He is also in the squad of the Austrian futsal Bundesliga club SC Vienna Walzer .

As a classic playmaker with high technical skills, he was considered one of Austria's greatest talents in the mid-1990s. In the course of his career, however, he polarized almost all of his clubs or was considered a "difficult character" and "lateral thinker" who often forced his early departure or was repeatedly suspended or dismissed from his club. As a result, he developed into a wandering bird, who changed clubs a total of 26 times from 1993 to 2017.

Despite the sometimes strong seasons, he never made a breakthrough at the highest level and spent most of his career with Austrian second and third division clubs .

Club career

Early years

Holemar began his career in the youth of his home club 1. Simmeringer SC , for which he also made his debut in an A-team. As a technically well-versed player, he quickly became one of the most conspicuous players in the Viennese city league, which was characterized by struggles, and attracted the interest of several professional clubs. Already after its first season, the then Austrian first division club FC Admira Wacker tried to get a commitment, which was forbidden by the Simmering club management. In the late autumn of the following season, the player, who had meanwhile been styled as the Duke of Had by the Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung , was temporarily suspended from his club for the first time due to indiscipline. At that time, Holemar was already considered to be one of the country's greatest young talents and had expressed the wish to move to a higher-class club. In the winter transition period of the 1995/96 season , Simmering then let him move on loan to FK Austria Vienna .

He was immediately awarded by Austria to their satellite club Prater SV , which at that time represented the club's amateur team under the name Prater Memphis . Under the coach of the time, Rudolf Flögel , he should be carefully introduced to the professional team, which succeeded immediately. After a strong second half at Prater SV, he was used for the first time in a competition game for Austria in the summer of 1996 during the UI Cup match against NK Maribor .

Then the final transfer of the player stalled, as Austria only wanted to pay around 110,000 schillings in training compensation due to the still young Bosman decision , but Simmering demanded 1.5 million schillings as a transfer fee and threatened to ban the player. In order to avoid the impending legal dispute, Holemar signed another amateur contract, which made Simmering's high transfer fee obsolete. The parties have agreed not to disclose the exact terms of the transfer.

This was followed by a city league runner-up title in the 1996/97 season , before he was able to win the championship title in the 1997/98 season as an outstanding player alongside the later Austrian national players Muhammet Akagündüz , Yüksel Sariyar and Bozo Kovacevic . Austria had already announced in winter that it would equip the player with a professional contract in the summer of 1998 and bring him fully into the A-team. Holemar, who only played 5 times in two and a half seasons for Austria in the UI Cup and in 23 test matches, however, turned it down and surprisingly switched to Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish Premier League together with his club colleague Christian Schandl .

At Hearts , he was given a half-year contract and accepted into the professional squad. As a result, he came to get used to the league, until winter in the Scottish Reserve League, where he was able to convince in contrast to Schandl. The club then tried to extend the contract, which his manager at the time refused to obtain better conditions and sent him to a one-week trial training camp for the then French first division club AJ Auxerre . In Auxerre Holemar could not convince and did not get a contract, the Hearts had withdrawn their contract offer due to the approach of the player and manager and refrained from an extension.

Bundesliga

As a clubless player, he returned to Austria in the spring of 1999, where, after another failed transfer to SV Salzburg , he came to the bottom of the Bundesliga Vorwärts Steyr . After a catastrophic autumn, Steyr wanted to stay in the league with Jürgen Sundermann as the new coach and the purchase of some experienced legionnaires such as Alexander Löbe , Jan Sopko or Didier Frenay , which did not succeed. At the end of the season they were relegated eleven points to the penultimate SC Austria Lustenau from the Bundesliga. Holemar celebrated his Bundesliga debut on March 3, 1999 during the 1-0 defeat against SV Salzburg, when he came on for Daniel Madlener in minute 58 . Overall, he was mostly a substitute in 12 out of 15 possible second round games. After relegation, the heavily indebted Steyr was quickly hit by financial problems, whereupon the majority of the players had to leave or leave the club.

Holemar was then brought in by coach Walter Skocik as the player of choice for the then second division First Vienna FC . Skocik had already worked with him during his time as coach of Austria Wien and was hoping for the breakthrough of the player, who is still considered a promising talent. His performance in the 1999/00 season was marked by great fluctuations from the start. Despite sometimes outstanding offensive performances, he often neglected the defensive game and was noticeable through a variety of indisciplines. After coach Skocik accused him of bad attitudes at the beginning of the autumn season , he was suspended for the first time after an inferior performance against SV Wörgl in October 1999, when he was replaced after only 20 minutes, and deported to the amateurs. The pardon for the last first round match against FC Kärnten , in which he offered a solid performance, was followed by further indiscipline during the winter break, which affected the relationship between the player and the club. In the second half of the season he lost almost all credit, but still made a few appearances before he was finally banned from the professional squad in April 2001 after another poor performance against WSG Wattens .

In the 2000/01 season he then moved within the league to the reigning runner-up and promotion co- favorites DSV Leoben . Under coach Milan Đuričić , he formed from then on as a playmaker, behind the strikers Joachim Parapatits and Roland Linz , a much-noticed offensive trio , which was seen as the core of the team. Although the club failed to move up to the Bundesliga with fourth place in the final ranking , it was considered the most positive appearance of the second division, which is mainly characterized by fighting, due to its refreshing offensive football . Holemar himself had established himself as a regular in a professional team for the first time and received an offer to extend his contract early on.

Four days before the start of 2001/02 , the player's transfer to the first division relegated LASK Linz surprisingly became known. Leoben, who had firmly planned with their playmaker for the new season, was surprised and later admitted an administrative glitch when the player's contract was extended. Holemar had agreed to a contract extension early, but never signed the paper. After he was treated with little appreciation in the final phase of the season in the general hustle and bustle of the move from top scorer Linz to Austria Vienna , he surprisingly decided to move.

The LASK station turned out to be just a short interlude for the player. After playing in the 3rd round against what was then SC Interwetten , he returned to Leoben after just one month at LASK. The DSV had unsuccessfully tried to find a replacement for Holemar, who in turn did not fit into the system of the then LASK trainer František Cipro and therefore agreed to a return transfer.

As a result, he played seven second round matches for Leoben, but in which he already had knee problems and kept falling out. After an operation during the winter break, he was convalescent for over a year and was about to end his career. His contract, which expired in the summer, was not extended.

Master in the RLO

After six months without a contract, he tried a comeback in the winter of the 2002/03 season . After several failed trial trainings and a. At SC Untersiebenbrunn he was finally signed by the then Austrian third division club SV Schwechat . At Schwechat he was able to establish himself again as a regular player and at the end of the season he celebrated the championship title in the Regionalliga Ost. In the penultimate round he suffered a broken tibia and fibula in the game against SKN St. Pölten and missed the promotion relegation games against WSG Wattens / FC Wacker Tirol , which the club lost just 0-0 and 3-2. After a six-month injury break, he celebrated his comeback in November 2003 against the Vienna sports club , but did not play for the full season until the end of the season.

In the following season he surprisingly moved one division deeper into the Vienna City League to his home club 1. Simmeringer SC . His second stay in Simmering was overshadowed by differences with coach Erich Obermayer , who finally suspended him in April 2005 for disciplinary reasons.

For the 2005/06 season he was surprisingly committed to replace the emigrated playmaker Markus Aigner from the Regionalliga promotion aspirant SKN St. Pölten . From then on, he experienced the most successful phase of his career at SKN. In his first season he presented himself as the driving force in the attacking game of St. Pölten from the first round and scored 12 goals in 30 league appearances. The club just missed promotion, one point behind master SC-ESV Parndorf .

The following season he started the season even stronger under coach Walter Hörmann and by the winter break had already scored 10 goals in 15 appearances. However, the club itself only took the disappointing 7th place in the table and, after some internal quarrels, including the departure of Hörmann, experienced a major upheaval. Holemar, a sought-after player again after his strong performances, moved to the Vienna Sports Club for the second half of the league .

At the Dornbacher he was supposed to crank up the previously crippling offensive game together with the further winter commitment Diego Viana and secure the championship title. This was only partially successful. Although Holemar scored 6 goals in 14 encounters, he was often stubborn and not very helpful to the team. After a listless performance and a recklessly awarded penalty that cost the sports club an important victory in the promotion race, he was immediately suspended by the then president, but brought back to the A-squad after a goalless draw against the second team of FC Admira Wacker . When he was supposed to be substituted on the last day of the match against the Rapid Amateurs by coach Wilhelm Kaipel , he refused the exchange until the referee gave him a yellow card and asked him to leave the field several times. Holemar justified his refusal later with the fact that he was still the top scorer of the RLO nc top scorer Eldar Topić with 19 goals. Holemar scored a total of 16 goals and moved again within the league to newly promoted SV Horn .

Cup winner with horn

In Horn he was again the undisputed playmaker right away and with 12 goals this season contributed a large share of the strong 6th place in the table. He also had a large share in winning the 2007/08 ÖFB Amateur Cup, which was played out as a replacement for the Austrian Football Cup due to the 2008 home European championship . In between there were differences of opinion with trainer Rupert Marko at this time , which ended in a suspension of the player in the 2008/09 season after several poor performances by Holemar. In the winter transition period, he then moved again within the league to SKU Amstetten , where Andreas Gutlederer, an old teammate from his time at Vienna, was working. It was followed by a solid first half of the season in which he was able to score 5 goals and Amstetten was relegated from the regional league as penultimate and he had to leave the team.

He then surprisingly joined the then sixth division SC Mannsdorf . In addition to Holemar, the Czech legionnaire Petr Mikel and the Slovak ex-professional player Tomáš Šimček , two other “star players” were in the squad of the ambitious Lower Austrians , who were clearly above the regional league in terms of their performance. As a result, the league was dominated. With only one defeat and 112 goals scored in 26 games, they won the championship title in the regional league NNW. Holemar was used in all 26 games and scored 23 goals.

For the 2010/11 season he moved again two leagues higher to ASK Schwadorf , where he was supposed to replace the Yugoslav ex-international Nenad Grozdić as playmaker. As a coach he met his former teammate from Vienna times Manfred Wachter , with whom he had a difficult time from the start. After he did not get beyond the status of a joker for the entire first half of the season, Schwadorf ended the cooperation, whereupon he switched to ASC Götzendorf within the league .

In 2011 he moved again to the regional league for FK Hainburg , who was supervised by ex-professional Jozef Valachovič . Hainburg wanted to make promotion after five seasons in the SSO regional league and signed Holemar as well as the Slovak ex-national player Szilárd Németh . After the ascent at the winter break seemed almost impossible with 10 points behind leaders FCM Traiskirchen , the club brought about a change and separated from its expensive star players. Holemar, with only 3 goals this season far below expectations, then moved to the second half of the season at SV Haitzendorf .

For the 2012/13 season he moved again to the Regionalliga Ost for SC Ostbahn XI who, as a promoted team, was looking for established players for the relegation battle. After moderate performance in the first half of the season, he left the club again in the direction of the 1st regional league for SV Würmla , where he continued to perform as a regular player until the winter of the 2013/14 season . He then moved to ASK Eggendorf in the 2nd Lower Austrian Regional League East as the preferred player from coach Christian Aflenzer , with whom he was active for DSV Leoben . After a rather disappointing second half of the season with 3 goals, he moved to SC Lassee in the NNW regional league, where he met Gerald Schalkhammer and his former coach from Mannsdorf. As a result, as a runner-up with the club, he just missed promotion to the second national league, but fulfilled expectations with 12 goals this season.

The following season he spent at UFC Obritz , which was also playing in the NNW regional league , before moving again to his home club 1. SC Simmering in the city league. After he only made two appearances in the second half of the season due to injury, his contract was canceled. At the age of 40 and 26, he is currently playing in the Lower Austrian 2nd class East at FC Wolfsthal .
