IC 56 is a faint bar spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBcd in the constellation Whale south of the ecliptic . It is about 274 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years across .
The galaxy PGC 3035 , which is also called IC-56A due to its similar appearance, is in close proximity . But it is neither an IC object nor do the two spirals have any connections.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 283 , NGC 284 , NGC 285 , NGC 286 .
The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on November 2, 1891 .
