NGC 1232 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It has a brightness of 9.8 mag and an angular extent of 7.4 × 6.5 '. The galaxy is around 68 million light years away from the Milky Way and is around 160,000 light years across .
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class spiral galaxies with a companion of low surface brightness on one arm (Arp catalog) . With its apparent companion PGC 11834 (unofficially called NGC 1232A ), NGC 1232 forms the object Arp 41 .
Detailed observations suggest the presence of significant amounts of dark matter .
The object was discovered on October 20, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
