NGC 1228 is a special lens-shaped galaxy ( ring galaxy ) of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is an estimated 459 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 220,000 ly. Together with NGC 1229 , NGC 1230 and IC 1892 , it forms the chain of galaxies Arp 332 . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This group of galaxies belongs to the class chains of galaxies .
The property was discovered by Francis Leavenworth in 1886 .
