Morton Betts
Morton Peto Betts (born August 30, 1847 in Bloomsbury , † April 19, 1914 in Menton ) was an English cricket and football player . He is known as the first final scorer of the English FA Cup when he won 1-0 against the Royal Engineers with his club Wanderers FC in 1872 .
Athletic career
Morton Betts was the son of the railway engineer Edward Ladd Betts , who married the sister of the well-known railway entrepreneur Samuel Morton Peto and who in turn had become his namesake. He enjoyed the education in the famous Harrow School , in northwest London area, and later he learned the trade of high and low construction engineer .
His sporting interests were both cricket and football . He played first-class cricket for Kent County Cricket Club and Middlesex County Cricket Club , as well as football for Wanderers FC and the Old Harrovians . In 1872 he won the first edition of the FA Cup with the Wanderers and contributed the only goal to the 1-0 final success against the Royal Engineers . Betts ran under the pseudonym AHChequer , referring to the fact that he had previously run for the Harrow Checkers . In 1877 he came to the English national football team for a single international match. In the game against Scotland he was used as a goalkeeper , although he had otherwise mostly acted in defense positions.
From 1887 to 1890 he was the secretary of the Essex County Cricket Club and served on the board of the English Football Association for around twenty years . He later moved to France and died shortly before the outbreak of the First World War on April 19, 1914 in the city of Menton .
