The highway begins on Interstate 70 at Glenwood Springs and ends south of Leadville on US Highway 24 . The State Highway leads over the 3,686 meter high Independence Pass with an average gradient of 6%. The first 50 miles of the road are four lanes and the Colorado State Highway 133 begins in Carbondale .
