Hong Fu Nü (* before 618 ; † 640 ; Chinese  紅拂女  - "lady with the red sleeves", maiden name Zhang Chuchen , Chinese  張 出塵 , alternatively 張 初 塵 ) was a legendary Chinese folk heroine during the transition between the Sui dynasty and Tang Dynasty . Hong Fu Nü was first described in the biography of the Dragon-Bearded Man from the Tang Dynasty. She was a courtesan at the court of the Sui Dynasty Minister Yang Su and escaped with Li Jing , an ally and later general of the future Tang emperor Li Shimin . Hong Fu Nü is known together with Li Jing and the "dragon-bearded man" Qiu Ranke as the "Three Heroes of Wind and Dust" ( Chinese  風塵 三俠 ).

Legend

The parents of Hong Fu Nü, who was born under the name of Zhang Chuchen, came from southern China and moved north to Chang'an during the Unification Wars of the Sui Dynasty . Zhang was sold to Sui Minister Yang Su's court as a courtesan, where she specialized in singing and dancing. Since she often wore red, she was called "Hong Fu Nü", the "lady with the red sleeves". According to legend, she saw Li Jing when he came to Yang Su with a petition about the social injustice of the common people. Zhang fell in love with Li and ran away with him.

Hong Fu Nü and Li Jing initially allied themselves with Qiu Ranke to overthrow the Sui dynasty. They became the "Three Heroes of Wind and Dust". After meeting the future emperor Li Shimin, Qiu Ranke gave up his ambitions. Hong Fu Nu and Li Jing allied with Li Shimin and helped him and his father Li Yuan establish the Tang Dynasty. Qiu Ranke meanwhile built his own kingdom Fusu (also: Fuyu) in the southeast.

Hong Fu Nu and Li Jing lived together as a woman and man until she died in 640 of an illness. Li Jing, then 70 years old, survived nine years.
