NGC 1294 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Perseus in the northern sky . It is an estimated 299 million light years from the Milky Way and about 95,000 light years in diameter. It forms an optical pair of galaxies with NGC 1293 and is a member of the Perseus Cluster .
The object was discovered on October 17, 1786 by the astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
