NGC 1317 = NGC 1318 (also Fornax B ) is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Fornax in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 82 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a disk diameter of around 70,000 ly. Together with NGC 1316 , it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair. It is listed as a member of the Fornax galaxy cluster under the catalog name FCC 22 .
In the same region of the sky there are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1310 and NGC 1326 .
The object was discovered on November 24, 1826 by James Dunlop using a 9-inch reflector (listed as NGC 1317 ). Rediscovered on January 19, 1865 by Julius Schmidt (listed as NGC 1318 ).
