NGC 1298 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E3 in the constellation Eridanus at the southern sky . It is an estimated 287 million light years from the Milky Way and about 95,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1287 , NGC 1289 , NGC 1305 , IC 314 .
The object was discovered by Heinrich d'Arrest on January 4, 1864 .
