Robert "Rob" Verkerk (born April 17, 1960 in The Hague ) is a retired Dutch officer in the Marine Corps Mariniers . He last held the rank of Lieutenant General and held the post of Commander in Chief of the Royal Navy from September 2014 to September 2017 .

Military career

Verkerk graduated from the Koninklijk Instituut voor de Marine in 1978 , and in 1982 he was awarded an officer license . During his training, he took various courses, including courses as a commando , paratrooper and ski instructor. Verkerk then made a career in the Dutch marine infantry. Among other things, he worked as a platoon and company commander and as head of a staff department. In 1995 he received the post of Deputy Chief of Staff for Planning and Commanding (G3) in a multinational brigade in Yugoslavia . From 1999 to 2001 Verkerk headed the training center of the Corps Mariniers, immediately followed by command of the 2nd Marine Infantry Battalion until 2003. As a staff officer, he was involved in the introduction of the first landing platform dock and the multi-purpose supply ship Karel Doormann for the Dutch Navy. Furthermore, he dealt with the reorganization of the operational marine infantry units and participated in the implementation of the naval study in 2005. In 2007 he was promoted to Brigadier General and was given command of the Mariniers Corps, which he held until the spring of 2012.

On September 26, 2014 Verkerk, now with the rank of Lieutenant General, succeeded Vice Admiral Matthieu Borsboom as Commander of the Dutch Navy ( Dutch Commandant of the Zeestrijdkrachten ) and consequently as Admiral Benelux . He held this command until September 22, 2017, when he was replaced by Vice Admiral Rob Kramer . During the handover ceremony at the naval base in Den Helder , Verkerk was appointed an officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau by the Dutch Defense Minister Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert .
