The ministerie van Defensie (short: MinDef , German: Ministry of Defense ) is the ministry responsible for the military defense of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and for the human, financial and material resources available for it. Politically, the ministry is headed by the Minister of Defense. Officially, the ministry is under the direction of the Secretary General. The Ministry of Defense had around 60,000 employees in 2020, making it one of the largest employers in the Netherlands . history

The origins of the ministry date back to 1813 when the ministerie van Oorlog ( Ministry of War ) and the ministerie van Marine ( Ministry of Navy ) were established. In 1959 the ministries were merged again and the present Ministry of Defense was created. Cornelis Staf was Minister of War from March 15, 1951 to December 22, 1958, but held the title of Minister of Defense from 1956.

Special organizational units

Armed forces

The Dutch armed forces are not an independent organization but are part of the Ministry of Defense. The armed forces consist of the Royal Navy (KM), the Royal Army (KL), the Royal Air Force (KLu) and the Royal Marechaussee (KMar). The armed forces are organized in three task forces, which report directly to the commander of the armed forces, as well as in the Marechaussee, which reports to the general secretary:

Political leadership

The Minister of Defense (member of the government) has full political responsibility. Ank Bijleveld (CDA) has been Minister since the Rutte III cabinet took office on October 26, 2017 . She is the second Minister of Defense in the Netherlands. State Secretary is Barbara Visser ( VVD ).

Official leadership

The administration and support services of the Ministry are subordinate to the Secretary General (SG), the highest official of the Ministry. The Administrative Staff is responsible for assisting the Minister and the Secretary of State in running the defense organization by defining policy and overseeing its implementation and evaluation.

Military leadership

The military command is in the hands of the Commander of the Armed Forces (CDS). The CDS is the highest military officer within the defense, the most important military advisor to the minister and the mediator between politics and the armed forces. It determines the operational policy and is responsible for the military strategic and operational military planning, preparation and deployment of the armed forces with the exception of the Marechaussee. For this purpose, it has its own staff within the administrative staff: the defense staff. Luitenant-admiraal Rob Bauer has held the position of CDS since October 5, 2017.
