The Militaire Inlichtingen- en Veiligheidsdienst ( MIVD ; German Military Intelligence and Security Service ) is the Dutch military intelligence service that reports to the Ministry of Defense and investigates the security of the armed forces and gathers military information from abroad.
The MIVD was created in 2002 from the former Militaire Inlichtingendienst ( MID ; German Military Intelligence Service ) and is based in The Hague . The civilian equivalent of the MIVD is the Algemene Inlichtingen- en Veiligheidsdienst (AIVD).
Statutory duties
The MIVD operates on the basis of the Law on Intelligence and Security Services from 2017 and has seven statutory tasks, which are listed in accordance with the letters specified in Article 10 paragraph 2 of this law:
- Task A: to conduct investigations into the military potential of other countries for the correct development and appropriate deployment of the Dutch armed forces, as well as into factors that influence or can influence the enforcement and promotion of the international legal order, insofar as the armed forces are involved or likely to be involved could be;
- B-task: conducting security reviews of candidates for trustworthy positions in the Ministry of Defense and the armed forces as well as for their suppliers;
- C task: the procurement of information to prevent activities that are aimed at impairing the security or the operational readiness of the armed forces, to promote the correct process of mobilization and the gathering of the armed forces, and to ensure the undisturbed preparation and deployment of the armed forces within the framework the enforcement and promotion of the international legal order;
- D task: promoting measures to maintain the security and operational readiness of the armed forces, including measures to protect information about the armed forces that are subject to confidentiality;
- E-task: carrying out investigations into other countries in relation to military-relevant issues;
- F-task: the creation of threat analyzes for persons, services and objects of military interest;
- G task: the provision, subject to various conditions, of data known to the service about specific persons or facilities of military interest.
