The Lahti L-35 is a Finnish self-loading pistol .
Finland
The weapon bears the name of the renowned weapon designer Aimo Lahti . He was commissioned around 1930 to present prototypes for a new standard handgun to the Finnish Army . The arsenal of the armed forces at that time consisted of a large number of European models, including from Belgium and Germany. Long outdated Nagant M1895 revolvers were also part of the inventory. Lahti's development proved to be very reliable when tested, even in extreme cold. The smooth functioning of the loading mechanism was supported by a so-called sling lever. This is usually only found in heavy weapons with a recoil charge and accelerates the movement of the slide. However, the production was quite complicated due to the use of complex milling technology, in Finland only about 9,000 copies were built.
Sweden
Instead, large numbers were produced in neighboring Sweden. The country bought replica licenses and outsourced the production to Husqvarna AB , where more than 100,000 pieces were made. Listed as the Model 40 pistol by the Swedish Army , it is also mentioned as the Husqvarna M 40 . The pistols in both countries differed little: Finnish models can be recognized by the embossing VKT on the grips, the Swedish by the old coat of arms of the Husqvarna company with an H in texture . Some features of the original design fell victim to the rationalization: First the charge indicator, later the sling lever. In the meantime, entire series had to be recalled because the steel used was of poor quality and parts of the lock broke. Overall, the Finnish originals were more reliable.
