NGC 4849 = IC 3935 is a 13.1 mag bright lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble-type S0 with an active galaxy core in the constellation Haar der Berenike in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 263 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 150,000 light-years across . Together with IC 838 , it forms the optical pair of galaxies Holm 495 .

In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 4859 , IC 835 , IC 837 , IC 834 .

The object was discovered twice; first on March 4, 1867 by Heinrich Louis d'Arrest (observation recorded as NGC 4849 ); then on June 12, 1895 by Stéphane Javelle (listed as IC 3935 ).
