NGC 4861 = IC 3961 = Arp 266 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SB (s) m: in the constellation Hunting Dogs in the northern sky , which is about 39 million light years away from the Milky Way . Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of galaxies with irregular clusters .

Many of the physical properties (such as mass, size and rotational speed) of the galaxy NGC 4861 speak for a classification as a spiral galaxy . In appearance, however, it is more like an irregular dwarf galaxy .

The object was discovered on May 1, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel . On March 21, 1903, Max Wolf rediscovered the object, which was recorded in the index catalog as IC 3961 .
