Michael "Mike" Millar (born April 28, 1965 in St. Catharines , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who was active in the National Hockey League , the German Ice Hockey League and the Swiss National League A during his career .

Career

Mike Millar began his playing career in 1982 with his hometown club, the Brantford Alexanders in the Ontario Hockey League , near his hometown. With 70 goals in two seasons you could already guess his qualities as a goalscorer early on. Consequently, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1984 in the sixth round in 110th position by the Hartford Whalers .

Before his first appearance in the National Hockey League , about two years should pass. First he was sent to the Hamilton Steelhawks within the OHL , before joining Team Canada for a year in 1985 . Here, too, he was able to convince with 88 points in only 69 games. Finally, he was brought in 1986 by the Hartford Whalers, where he also scored his first goal in his first game. In the 6-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers , he overcame Andy Moog to 2-0 in the meantime. Most of the time, however, he was used on the farm team Binghamton Whalers in the American Hockey League . On July 6, 1988, he was transferred to the Washington Capitals with his comrade Neil Sheehy . Hartford got the players Grant Jennings and Ed Kastelic from the capital city. But here, too, Millar spent most of the time with the farm team, the Baltimore Skipjacks in the AHL. On October 2, 1989, the next change followed when Millar was sent to the Boston Bruins and Alfie Turcotte went to the Caps in return. The farm team that year were the Maine Mariners , for whom he played 60 of 75 games that season. In 1990 he came to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a year , for which he only made seven games. He spent most of the season with the Newmarket Saints .

His first stop in Europe was ESV Kaufbeuren in 1991 . The following year he made a short trip to Switzerland , to the EHC Chur . In the same year he also came to three other assignments in Team Canada. In 1993 he was finally committed to the EC Kassel , which with him became a founding member of the German Ice Hockey League in 1994 . After disagreements during the 1997/98 season , he switched to the Frankfurt Lions at short notice , but where he could not prevail. In 1998 he finally came to GEC Nordhorn , which had to file for bankruptcy the following year . So he moved again, this time to the Hamburg Crocodiles , with whom he was relegated to the league in the second season . After a short guest appearance of six missions for REV Bremerhaven in the 2001/02 season, he finally went back to Canada.

Mike Millar had his longest and most successful engagement in Kassel. There he was hired as a goalscorer in 1993 and lived up to this reputation in the following years. In 1994 the 1st Bundesliga became the German Ice Hockey League and the EC Kassel became the Kassel Huskies . Millar quickly became a crowd favorite and regularly made it onto the podium in internal elections for “Player of the Year”. One of the hardest slap shots in the league earned him the nickname "Mortar Mike".

Ironically in the otherwise so successful runner-up championship season 1996/97 he was slowed down by a hand injury. On December 22nd, he broke a thumb in the game against Starbulls Rosenheim and had to take a few weeks off. He did not succeed in the following years to follow up on his old goals. In addition, there were internal disagreements with the club management at the beginning of the 1997/98 season , when some players pushed for the dismantling of the then "Coach of the Year" Gerhard Brunner . After this was finally dismissed and the success still failed, Millar and other players were suspended from the game. In a "night and fog" campaign, he then signed a contract with arch rivals from southern Hesse , the Frankfurt Lions, until the end of the season . After around five years and 231 games wearing the # 13 Huskies' dress, this change marked the end of an era in Kassel ice hockey. To this day he leads the club statistics for most goals (94) in the preliminary round games of the DEL years as well as the point average (1.25) per game.

After returning from Europe, he ended his career in 2003 with the Dundas Real McCoys , a senior team of the Ontario Hockey Association.
