NGC 4856 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0-a in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 55 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 70,000 ly. The galaxy has an angular extent of 4.3 '× 1.2' and an apparent magnitude of 10.6 mag.
The galaxies NGC 4877 , NGC 4887 , NGC 4902 , NGC 4924 are located in the same area of ​​the sky .

The object was discovered on February 8, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel .
