NGC 4831 is a 12.4 mag bright elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E / SB0 in the constellation of Hydra south of the ecliptic . he is an estimated 142 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 75,000 light years .
The object was discovered on March 22, 1836 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "F, R, gbM, 25 arcseconds".
