NGC 4820 is a 13.9 likes bright lenticular galaxy of Hubble type S0 in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic. It is estimated to be 201 million light years from the Milky Way and about 65,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4825 , NGC 4823 , NGC 4829 , NGC 4847 .
The object was discovered together with NGC 4823 and NGC 4829 in a single observation in 1882 by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel , who noted "Quite close to the south [of N4825] are three more faint nebulae".
