NGC 4818 is a 11.3 mag bright bar spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBab in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 43 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 60,000 light years in diameter .
The galaxies NGC 4773 , NGC 4777 , NGC 4780 , IC 3883 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on March 3, 1786 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “pB, vL, iF, lbM”. John Herschel noted during his observation in 1834: "B, L, mE in meridian, gpmbM, 3 ′ long".
