IC 551 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type Scd in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 377 million light years from the Milky Way and about 90,000 light years in diameter.

In the same area of ​​the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 2948 .

The object was discovered on April 10, 1893 by Stéphane Javelle .
