IC 540 is a spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 85 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 25,000 ly.
In the same area of ​​the sky are the galaxies NGC 2882 , NGC 2894 , NGC 2906 , among others .

The object was discovered on April 10, 1893 by the astronomer Stéphane Javelle .
