NGC 2948 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Leo, north of the ecliptic . It is an estimated 217 million light years from the Milky Way and about 95,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy IC 551 .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on March 24, 1786 .
