NGC 2940 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 380 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years across.

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 2913 , NGC 2939 , IC 548 .

The object was discovered in 1877 by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel .
