NGC 2940 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 380 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 2913 , NGC 2939 , IC 548 .
The object was discovered in 1877 by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel .
